An Austin rugby team will be one of three from Texas to be a part of Major League Rugby when it launches in 2018.
Ten teams in nine cities will be a part of the venture, including the Austin Huns. Several attempts to start a pro rugby league in the United States have
failed in the past, and Huns Rugby Management (HRM) said it will open up 30 percent of its shared to accredited investors to be able to grow and develop
professional rugby in the city.
“Rugby is growing very fast, and Austin is a very popular city for rugby with two amazing amateur clubs, the Austin Huns and the Austin Blacks. There are
also many high school teams and youth programs. The future is bright, and we are excited to bring a professional team to the city,” said Richard Osborn,
President of Huns Rugby Management in a prepared statement.
The following groups are listed as founding members of MLR as of May 10:
– 1924 Rugby – Glendale, Colo.
– Blues Rugby Management – Kansas City, Mo.
– DFW Major Rugby – Dallas
– Houston Strikers – Houston
– Huns Rugby Management – Austin
– NOLA Rugby Enterprises – New Orleans
– Seattle Rugby LLC – Seattle
– Tornadoes Rugby LLC – Minneapolis
– Rugby Utah Ventures – Salt Lake City
MLR added it will announce the final team and venue list, along with 2018 schedule, in the coming months. TAP HERE for more information about the Austin Huns.
